Anita Evergreen Cemetery
East Hwy 83 Anita, Iowa, 50020

From the early 1860s until 1879, burials took place at a cemetery that was provided by Grant Township. In 1879 a non-profit association of lot owners formed the Evergreen Cemetery Association of Grant Township and all graves with identification markers were exhumed and transferred here. The association was granted permission in 1971 to transact business as the Anita Evergreen Association, Inc. and continues to operate in a non-profit manner. Since the purchase of the original tract of land additional tracts have been purchased and the Anita Evergreen Cemetery now comprises of approximately 15 acres of land.

Honoring our Veterans has been a long-held Memorial Day tradition at the Anita Evergreen Cemetery. From the early days when a Memorial Day grand march to the cemetery was held and flowers were placed on the graves of Civil War Veterans, to the current tradition of the Court of Honor flags flying in remembrance of all our veterans. The flying of the flags is a joint effort between two Anita veterans' organizations, the American Legion Post 210 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8766. First flown in 1964, each flag represents a deceased veteran of military service to the United States of America and is marked with the veteran's name, branch of service and date of death. There were 325 flags flying on Memorial Day, May 26th, 2003. The flags are donated by relatives of the deceased, the Legion and VFW Auxiliaries mark the flags and mend or repair them as needed. When not in use the flags are stored at the Legion Hall and may be loaned to family members.
